Sir,
With reference to B.G. Balaji’s letter ‘Garbage on every road?’ published in SOM dated Apr. 8, I wish to address the pressing concerns raised about the state of affairs in Mysuru city.
The issue of widespread garbage mounds across the city is indeed a long-standing problem, exacerbated by the apparent indifference of the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC). Citizens indeed bear some responsibility due to a lack of civic sense, often stemming from illiteracy and inadequate education.
Instances of public urination, defecation and indiscriminate littering only worsen the situation. Furthermore, the rampant burning of garbage, particularly near the vegetable and fruit market on M.G. Road, poses serious health risks, especially for individuals with respiratory issues.
Another issue highlighted is the cattle menace, largely stemming from the negligence of market vendors who fail to maintain cleanliness. This results in the attraction of stray cattle, further contributing to pollution and unhygienic conditions in the city.
MCC Commissioner must urgently address this issue and ensure strict enforcement of cleanliness standards in markets.
Additionally, I support the appeal for the construction of a median on M.G. Road to regulate vehicular traffic and potentially relocate the vegetable and fruit market. However, I acknowledge the challenges associated with implementing the Indore model in Mysuru, given the prevailing socio-economic factors and lack of citizen engagement.
Furthermore, the alarming incidence of fatal accidents, such as the recent pedestrian fatality involving a KSRTC bus, underscores the urgent need for improved road safety measures.
Reckless driving practices, including mobile phone use while driving and disregarding traffic signals, are rampant and require immediate attention from the Police department. However, it is disheartening to note the apparent indifference of law enforcement authorities towards addressing these issues.
Despite continuous efforts to raise awareness and advocate for change, it appears that the authorities have yet to prioritise resolving these issues. I once again appeal authorities to take decisive action and address these concerns promptly to ensure well-being of residents.
