Golden chariot for Chamundi Temple: Minister to look into proposal

Mysore/Mysuru: Muzrai Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary yesterday said that he would examine the proposal for Rs.7.60 crore to build a gold chariot for Goddess Chamundeshwari, the presiding deity of Chamundi Hill, in Mysuru.

“I will hold discussions with Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and examine the detailed report,” he said. The Golden Chariot will be built on the lines of the one (Suvarna Ratha) at Sringeri Sharada Temple.

The Minister said that donations received by temples will be used only for temple development and related works and not for any other purpose. He said he was not aware of the practice that prevailed earlier but ever since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has come to power in the State, a decision was taken not to divert funds and donations received      by temples.

He also said that mass marriages will be conducted across 100 select Muzrai temples in the State from April 26. The last date for registration is March 27 and officials have been directed to launch a publicity campaign so as to elicit good response. The Government will spend Rs. 55,000 per couple and this includes Rs. 40,000 for gold, Rs. 10,000 for the bride and Rs. 5,000 for the groom, he said.
