Mysore/Mysuru: Seeking fulfilment of their demands, which chiefly included regularisation of service, the workers and D Group employees serving in Government-run student hostels, will stage a massive demonstration at Freedom Park in Bengaluru on July 29.
Announcing this at a press meet held at Pathrakartara Bhavan here on Wednesday, Hostel Workers Association State President K. Somashekar said that the Social Welfare, Backward Classes Welfare, SC/ST Welfare and Minority Welfare Departments, Universities and other Government Agencies were running student hostels across the State, in which about 35,000 cooks, assistants, D Group employees and watchmen were serving for years without any Governmental benefits.
Pointing out that a majority of the workers were outsourced personnel, Somashekar said that a good number of them were women, who have been deprived of their rightful benefits.
Urging the Government to regularise the service of hostel workers, he also demanded granting of statutory benefits such as PF, ESI, gratuity etc., to them. He also sought payment of Dearness Allowance in keeping with rising prices and inflation.
Alleging that the workers were not being paid wages in time, Somashekar claimed that a good number of workers were not paid wages for about eight months and the Government should take measures for release of their pending wages.
All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) leaders Chandrashekar Meti, Muddukrishna, Harish, Rajesh and others were present at the press meet.
