The implementation of a GPS-based toll system on the Mysuru-Bengaluru Highway brings promising developments. The concern regarding free usage of the highway between toll plazas and the service lane by certain individuals has been a long-standing issue.
By introducing high-speed cameras equipped with licence plate reading capabilities, the authorities aim to address these challenges, although the effectiveness of maintenance procedures for such technology remains a consideration, given the prevailing circumstances in India.
Charging tolls based on the distance travelled is a welcome change, offering users a fairer pricing structure aligned with their actual usage. However, it remains to be seen whether travellers covering the entire distance between Bengaluru and Mysuru will incur similar charges as they do under the current system, or if the per-kilometre rate will result in higher fees for such journeys.
The planned launch of the satellite-based tolling system before the Lok Sabha polls indicates a strategic move by the Government. With the Election Commission of India expected to provide advance notice of the election dates, this timeline allows the Government to implement the new system and potentially leverage it for political and electoral advantage.
However, it is essential that such advancements prioritise fairness, efficiency and accountability to truly benefit the public and address long-standing issues within the tolling system.
