Helmet wearing Police must not walk the talk but Act the talk

This is with reference to the letter titled ‘Helmet wearing: Police must first walk the talk’ published in Star of Mysore dated June 24.

I was shocked to read this letter in SOM, which has been educating — both in this paper and also in its sister publication Mysuru Mithra — the two-wheeler riders and all those who are supposed to wear helmets while riding, including pillion riders for ages (our paper is 48 years old).

Two generations have passed and if there is still a wise two-wheeler rider or a wiser citizen in Mysuru who could send a letter of this kind to Star of Mysore, and surprisingly, Star of Mysore publishes it, I, as its Founder-Editor, cannot take it lying down.

In short, I would like to say only this. In Bengaluru, if you go there or the writer goes there, in the downtown area, you will never find any two-wheeler rider without wearing a helmet. That is because the Police have not only fixed CCTV cameras at all vantage points but also enforced the law very strictly, levying burdensome fines, failing which they will have to go to prison.

That is how I have seen in Western countries how law enforcement is done. When people like us go abroad, we say, look at Western countries, how disciplined they are on public roads. Therefore, instead of advising the irresponsible two-wheeler riders, it is better if this gentleman conducts coaching classes as a social service, and then, Star of Mysore will be the first one to publish it and also encourage that kind of service.
