With more number of old structures crumbling, it is high time for the guardians of “heritage” to re-look and re-think their views on restoring, re-constructing or maintaining these structures at the cost of human lives.
Human life is more precious than the heritage value of any crumbling and dilapidated old structures.
God forbid, suppose a heritage building collapses, I can vouch that none of the guardians of heritage structures will be around these buildings.
It will be some other unfortunate victim and their family who will face permanent misery, when an old building collapses — like it happened when Lansdowne building collapsed.
When a building has out-lived its life, it is better to opt for a new structure very similar type to the old structure, may be with additional facilities.
More than being sentimental over the heritage value of the buildings, we should opt for a practical approach. Being sentimental will only invite miseries for the people moving around these old buildings.
