Mysuru: High drama prevailed at the Railway Quarters at Yadavagiri yesterday after a 45-year-old mentally disturbed man climbed an overhead water tank threatening to commit suicide. He was working as a Police Constable in Bengaluru and was dismissed from service due to his mental condition.

He has been identified as Jayakumar and the incident occurred near the official residence of MCC Commissioner. Seeing Jayakumar in a precarious position, V.V. Puram Police and Fire Service Department personnel from Saraswathipuram rushed to the spot and managed to convince him to climb down.

When Jayakumar saw the Police and the Fire Department personnel climbing the ladder of the water tank, Jayakumar threatened that he would throw iron rods on them if they tried to come near him. After instructions from the officer, the fire-fighting personnel came back.

After nearly an hour, the men in uniform were successful in persuading Jayakumar who agreed to come down. Soon after he came down, as he was hungry, Police took him for breakfast and later to the Police Station and conducted a medical test.

Jayakumar told the Police that three people started attacking him and he was forced to climb the water tank for safety. Before climbing the water tank, Jayakumar had climbed a mango tree near the area. V.V. Puram Inspector C.V. Ravi counselled Jayakumar and made arrangements to send him to Bengaluru.

Saraswathipuram Fire Station Officer Nagaraj Urs, Assistant Fire Station Officer Shivaswamy, Lead Fire Officer Devaraj and staff Ravi, Thomas and Ananda took part in the rescue operation.
