Hindustani Classical Music Recitals in city on Jan.26

Mysore/Mysuru: Gayana Sabha, Mysuru, has organised two Hindustani Classical Music recitals on Jan.26 at Kalpa Kshetra auditorium,  # 581/1, Vijayanagar 4th Stage, 1st Phase, Mysuru, starting at 5.30 pm. 

Pandit Anupam Joshi of Pune will present Sarod recital, followed by vocal rendering by Shrimathi Devi. They will be accompanied by Pandit Arup Sen Gupta on tabla while Surya Upadhyaya will provide harmonium support.

Pandit Anupam Joshi started his musical journey initially with tabla at the age of seven, but when he attended a Sarod recital of legendary Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, he decided to pursue training in Sarod. He was under the tutelage of Sitarist late Pt. Sudhir Phadke from whom he learnt rare compositions of Guru Maa Annapurna Devi. Subsequently, he trained with Ken Zukerman, a senior disciple of Ustad Ali Akbar in Switzerland. 

During later years Pandit Sohan Neelkanth, a disciple of Pandit Rajeev Taranath, introduced Anupam to the nuances of Sarod. Presently, he is in advanced training from Pt. Rajeev Taranath and Pt. Tejendra Narayan Mujumdar, two senior disciples of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. 

After gaining musical maturity, Anupam has started composing music to documentaries. The Hollywood Documentary ‘Among the Believers’ in which he played Sarod, won an award at the Hollywood Film Festival.

A regular performer in the city, Shrimathi Devi  is a talented young vocalist who has trained under maestros like Pandit Chandrashekhar Puranikmath, Pandit Narayan Pandit, Vyasamurthi Katti and Vidushi Padma Talwalkar, Pune. Presently, she is in advanced training under Pandit Ravikiran Manipal, a senior disciple of Pt. Narayan Pandit.

Shrimathi Devi secured first rank in Alankara examination conducted by Akhila Bharatha Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Miraj and is a grade B-High artiste of AIR.

 She is a recipient of many scholarships and awards by Cultural Ministries of Government of India and Karnataka. 

Shrimathi has been performing extensively in India and abroad at prestigious venues like Indian Culture Centre, Utah, USA; Sur Bahaar Sangeetha Sabha, Mumbai; Sapthak, Bengaluru; Alwa’s Nudisiri, Moodubidre; Ragadhana, Udupi; Nadabrahma Sangeetha Sabha, Mysuru and many more.

Shrimathi Devi is a prolific writer too. She has published many articles on music and other topics of interest.

Born and brought up in Germany, Arup Sen Gupta is a disciple of accomplished tabla player Pt.Subhen Chatterjee. He has accompanied many of the finest Indian musicians such as Rajeev Taranath, Partho Bose, Ronu Majumadar, Buddhadev Dasgupta and western performers  Ken Zuckerman, David Trasof, Stephanie Bosch, to name a few.

A disciple of renowned harmonium player Pandit Ravindra Katoti, young Surya Upadhyaya  accompanies many fine vocalists regularly. He is multi-talented and has mastered mridanga and ghata too.
