Hunsur: With the elections to the second tenure of President and Vice-President of Hunsur CMC (City Municipal Council) scheduled to take place on Sept. 9, hectic political activities are going on in the three main political parties — Congress, BJP and JD(S).
The Government has now announced the reservation matrix for Presidential posts, according to which the President post is reserved for Backward Class Category A and the Vice-President post is reserved for ST (Woman).
Hunsur CMC, which had no elected head for past 15 months, was being run by a Government appointed Administrative Officer.
The Hunsur CMC is a 31-member body, with the Congress having 14 members, the JD(S)-7, BJP-3, 5 independents and 2 others. The Congress, which had been successful in ruling the CMC during the first tenure, is now making efforts to garner the required numbers for the second tenure of the current term. However, the JD(S)-BJP combine, which claims to have the support of 17 members, including that of the independents and that of Hunsur MLA and Mysuru-Kodagu MP who are also voters in the Presidential polls, is expected to win Presidential polls rather comfortably, in the changed political scenario, according to observers.
However, the election is likely to be held only for the President post, as the Vice-President post, which is reserved for ST (Woman) candidate, has only one ST (Woman) member in the entire Hunsur CMC. The Vice-President post is most likely to go to Asha, who has won from Ward. 2. Asha is becoming lucky for the second straight time, as the Vice-President post was reserved for ST (Woman) in the first tenure too.
However, there are many aspirants for the President post who include Swamygowda of the Congress, Bhavya, Zabiullah, Syed Yunus of SDPI, Ganesh Kumaraswamy of the BJP, Vivek and Harish, Saravana of the JD(S), Shahin Taj and Malik Pasha, an independent.
Anyway, the election to Hunsur CMC President post has raised curiosity in political circles, with ruling Congress and the Opposition JD(S)-BJP combine sparing no efforts to get the all important post in the civic body.
