Mysuru: The controversial work on the straightening of the Hunsur Road that curves near Jaladarshini Guest House adjacent to Kukkarahalli Lake, which is accident-prone, claiming every year lives and limbs of many motorists will begin from Oct. 16.
It may be recalled that District in-charge Minister Dr. H.C. Mahadevappa had announced recently that the foundation stone for the straightening of road would be laid on Oct.12. However, the work on the Rs. 12 crore project would begin without the foundation stone being laid.
The work is being taken up by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). Executive Engineer of NHAI T.R. Shivaram speaking to Star of Mysore, this morning said, “The work on this stretch would begin from this Monday (Oct. 16) on a war-footing.
The road will be straightened on Hunsur Road from Kalamandira up to Bhudevi Farm. The tenders were opened recently and a contractor from Mysuru, Ravikumar has bagged the contract.”
He said that because of the curve, even though it had been converted to a double road long time back, accidents continued to occur at this spot. Many two-wheeler riders have lost their lives and even the four-wheeler drivers who speed up on this stretch at night, lose control near the curve resulting in fatal accidents. “The only solution is to straighten this stretch of road and prevent from further loss of lives,” said Shivaram.
