Mysuru: The members of the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) Health Standing Committee conducted a surprise raid yesterday on a parota-making unit operating in a choultry without trade license. The Committee served a notice and asked them to stop the production of parotas. Surprisingly, none of the people working there are aware as to who is the owner of the unit.
The public had been complaining since long that Star Function Hall in Aziz Sait Nagar had been converted into a parota manufacturing unit and were functioning in unhygienic conditions. In the light of the complaints, the Health Standing Committee conducted a surprise raid. During the raid, many facts came to light like converting the choultry into a parota manufacturing unit and the absence of the facilities required for a food production unit.
The readymade parotas produced here are being sent to Mysuru, Bengaluru and many other places including hotels and retail outlets and business is said to be worth a few crores of rupees. More than 150 youth, both boys and girls, from different parts of the country work here. They have not been provided any basic facilities. The whole place where the food item is manufactured is very unclean and in a total mess. There is no labelling found that should include the name of the company, the manufacturing date, quantity and expiry date on the sacks of the maida flour stacked in the choultry.

The Health Standing Committee which found the discrepancies have asked for all the details and served a notice. They have collected the samples of the food and sent it to the laboratory for checking the quality.
It is illegal to set up a Manufacturing Unit in a residential area and all precautions must be taken especially when one is setting up a Food Industry as it directly affects the health of millions. However, what is most surprising is no one who is working there knows who the owner or partner of the unit is. All that is known is that a person from Kerala might be partnering with a local person in running the unit. Hence, they have been asked to stop production, said Health Officer Dr. D.G. Nagaraj.

The public are demanding that all places where such illegal units including the soft drink and ice cream manufacturing ones are functioning should be checked.
