Mysore/Mysuru: Impressionz showcases Indira Lavanya, a solo show to town, a curated collection from the master weavers of Banaras (Benaras), starring exclusive hand-woven products, at The Quorum Hotel in city on Mar. 15 and 16.
An awe-inspiring array of sarees — Mashru silks, Meenakari, Jangla soft drapes, Tanchoi silks, uniquely patterned Kora silks, Tussar Georgettes and Cotton Jamdanis — will tempt shoppers.
Benares is a very special centre for weaving; the loom and techniques used are most detailed and advanced despite their indigenous nature.
The Jangla saree, for example has a dense interlaced pattern — usually floral or konia (betel leaf or paisley motif) — with an intricately patterned border and pallu. Tanchoi is an interesting technique where the base weft itself is used to create a pattern on the fabric. Mashru, though not traditionally woven in Benares, is being made here today due to advanced looms — it uses silk warp and cotton weft with zari patterning. Benarasi fabrics typically include betel leaves, paisleys, foliage, shikar scenes, rudraksh and chand motifs.
In addition to these beautiful sarees being exhibited by Indira, her dupattas woven from Munga silk and pure Katan silk are a beautiful blend of the modern and the traditional, as are her hand-woven lehengas and Munga silk suit pieces.
Expo is open from 10.30 am to 8.30 pm on both days.
