Mysore/Mysuru: A senior citizen narrowly escaped a suspected fake accident extortion attempt near Ballal Circle on New Kantharaj Urs Road, thanks to his presence of mind and prior awareness of similar scams reported in Star of Mysore.
The incident occurred around 4.45 pm on Sept. 24, shortly after the senior citizen (name withheld on request) had dropped off his relatives at Saraswathipuram following a visit to Sushrutha Eye Hospital.
While driving towards Ashoka Circle, a bike rider allegedly struck the left rear door of the car with his hand, creating a loud sound before overtaking and signalling the senior citizen to stop.
Upon halting near Dr. Ambedkar Road, the biker accused the senior citizen of causing an accident and claimed his pillion rider was injured. He then attempted to enter the vehicle by reaching through the window, but was thwarted when the driver locked the doors and began recording the interaction.
Recalling a series of recent reports in SOM, the senior citizen invoked the name of Kuvempunagar Police Inspector Yogesh and threatened to call the Police. This prompted the biker to abandon the confrontation, demand an apology and flee the scene. The partial registration number noted was KA XX XX 6920.
The citizen has urged Mysuru Police to take swift action against such daytime street extortionists, who prey on elderly drivers. He also requested that future news reports include Police contact details or WhatsApp numbers to facilitate immediate public reporting.
