Mysuru: Narayana Multispeciality Hospital conducted an interactive educational programme on Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) at its premises in city recently.
Dr. Satheesh Rao, Senior Consultant Medical Gastroenterologist, conducted the prog. involving doctors, patients and care-takers. He said, IBD can be present in any age and is more commonly seen in the age group of 20 to 30 years. Symptoms were also seen in people above the age of 50, he added.
Dr. Satheesh said: “Crohn’s disease that can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract is more likely among those with a strong first circle family history such as parents or siblings as well as those who are habitual smokers. The exact cause of IBD cannot be attributed to any one type as it is a combination of genetic as well as environmental factors.”
He confirmed that IBD is normally treated using medications to control the symptoms and reduce the risk of a flare-up. IBD can also cause arthritis, skin diseases, eye inflammation, liver problems and bone-related ailments. Surgery is usually the last options, he added.
The 90-minute session addressed varied aspects of IBD including diagnosis, diet, treatment options, risks and clarification on many other topics.
