International Day of Yoga: 10,000 participants take part in the final rehearsal for June 21 main event

Mysuru: Nearly 10,000 people took part in the final rehearsal today at the sprawling Mysore Race Course premises for the June 21 International Day of Yoga (IDY) main event organised by the District Administration, Department of AYUSH and various Yoga Schools and organisations. The previous two rehearsals were held at Mysore Palace premises.

The participants, who assembled at the Race Course premises at about 6 am, warmed up themselves for the rehearsal, which began at about 7 am.

“Though 60,000 participants have registered online for the main event on June 21, we are expecting one lakh participants and are roping in yoga schools and other yoga organisations to make sure that one lakh people will take part in the main event,” said Tourism Department Deputy Director H.P. Janardhan.

Meanwhile, a member of Yoga Samithi said that an approximate fund of Rs.50 lakh is required and the Tourism Department has only Rs.10 lakh, we have requested Tourism Minister S.R. Mahesh to grant funds and added that the Minister has assured to grant funds through the Tourism Department. The member said that even some private companies have come forward to sponsor the main event up to Rs. 1 lakh and the details about it would be known in a day or two.

Tourism Minister S.R. Mahesh, MLAs S.A. Ramdas and L. Nagendra, heads of various Yoga Schools and organisations took part in the rehearsal.

It may be recalled that 55,506 participants took part in the International Day of Yoga last year, which created a record by entering the Guinness World Records for Largest Yoga Lesson.
