Mysuru: An Indian Jackal was killed in a road accident (roadkill) on Tuesday night, near the Amphi Theatre outside the Manasagangothri Campus on the road connecting Bogadi and Hunsur Roads. (Incidentally, this road was proposed to be named Rashtrapati Road, to mark the visit of President Pranab Mukherjee to inaugurate the year-long Centenary Celebrations of University of Mysore on July 27, 2015).
The early morning walkers and passers-by noticed the carcass and many thought it was of a dog. On closer watch by a few wildlife enthusiasts, it was discovered that the carcass was of the Indian Jackal. As the Jackal was lying on the road, a few shifted it to the footpath and then informed the Forest Department. The officials came and took the carcass for post-mortem.
The Jackal is a sub-adult. A few of the wildlife watchers have seen the Jackals breeding in Kukkarahalli Lake. The traffic is very dense on this road and late in the night, people drive very fast, as there are no barricades but only a few road humps, which results in many accidents.

A wildlife expert, speaking to Star of Mysore, said that this is not the first time that such an incident of a Jackal has occurred.
It may be recalled that about four months ago, the early morning walkers had found a Jackal cub. Many of them picked it up, fondled it and took selfies. Sadly, in the same spot a Jackal has been killed.
