Mysuru: Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE) Team Heritage, an inter-disciplinary team comprising students drawn from Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering and Electronics & Communication Engineering departments bagged the ‘Best Innovation Award’ at Hybrid Scooter Design and Development Competition held in the TVS Institute for Quality and Leadership, Anekal, Bengaluru, recently.
The SAE (Society for Automotive Engineers) – EGA (Electrifying Green Aspirations) is a competition with an objective to encourage engineering students to build a hybrid scooter (powered by both the conventional IC engine as well as an electric motor) from concept to reality — from virtual designs to a roadworthy scooter.
The competition had one virtual round where the concept was presented. There were around 23 teams which took part including colleges like VIT Vellore, TIT&S Bhopal. Finally 12 teams were selected for the design, development and road trial round.
Students were given guidelines to modify the vehicle as per the norms for the scooter to be converted to a hybrid scooter with emission-free, noise-free environment-friendly vehicle road worthy for multiple trials for the conclusive part of the competition.
SJCE-Team Heritage could implement these ideas and the team’s design was one of the few designs which stood out from the rest based on the features of compactness, efficiency, acceleration, power train design and uniqueness of touch panel features. The team worked under the guidance of Dr. G. Mallesh, Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering.
Dr. B.G. Sangameshwara, Vice-Chancellor, JSS Science and Technology University and Dr. K.S.Lokesh, Registrar, JSS Science and Technology University (JSSTU), lauded the efforts of the students and faculty in this accomplishment.
TVS Motors Limited sponsored a brand new “TVS Jupiter” scooter to all those institutions, colleges which cleared the virtual round.
Apart from the “Best Innovation Award,” a cheque for Rs.5,000 and a certificate was also presented to the team, according to a press release from Dr. T.N. Nagabhushana, Principal, SJCE.
