‘Kukkarahalli Lake Development works taken up with public support’ Says Mysore Varsity authorities

Stating that the de-silting and other development works have been taken up at Kukkarahalli Lake without causing any damage to the environment, University of Mysore Registrar  Prof. R. Rajanna has maintained that the ongoing works have public support.

Pointing out that the then DC had convened a meeting of environmentalists and officials on Mar.11, 2016, after apprehensions were raised that some members of the public and environmentalists may pose a hurdle to the works, Prof. Rajanna said that the meeting saw support from all quarters following which the works were taken up.

But as some members of the public continued to oppose the de-silting and other developmental works at the Lake, the University incharge Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dayananda Mane, Registrar Prof. J. Somashekar, Syndicate member M.S.S. Kumar, University Executive Engineer H. Kishore Chandra, Horticulture Officer S.K. Mujawar and other University faculty visited the Lake on Feb.23, when the acting VC said that no structures are coming up at Kukkarahalli Lake and only de-silting is being done in areas where water is less. Also such de-silting will largely help in expanding water storage and retention capacity of the Lake and will have no impact on the environment.

The visiting team members and others at the site, agreed with the VC’s statement, Prof. Rajanna said.

Meanwhile, Kukkarahalli Lake Protection Committee Convenor Prof. K.M. Jayaramaiah has asked the contractor not to disturb the nesting birds at the northern bund of the Lake and also to ensure that no stench emanates from pits, which are filled with algae at the western and eastern bunds of the Lake.

The March 11, 2016 meeting on Kukkarahalli Lake development chaired by the then DC had approved installation of e-water hormonisers, construction of a boating arena, orchidarium, a butterfly park and other works.
