Lack of lane discipline and reckless driving taking toll on Highways

Sir,

It is reported that in a  ghastly accident 10 persons including the driver of a private car died in a head-on collision with a private bus  (Nine tourists from Ballari killed as car rams into bus, SOM dated May 30). The details given shows that all were young including three children while the maximum age of the adult in the group was 46 years.

It gives me no pleasure in writing this letter but am doing so to give my perception of reasons for accident from the details given in the report to create awareness so that such Highway accidents may be prevented in future.

Obviously both the vehicles were being driven at reckless speed. While bus drivers are immune to advice, not one of the tourists in the car cautioned the driver to control his speed.

The driver of the car made a fatal mistake of not observing the lane discipline. In addition,  it appears the curve in the road (near Kurbur village in T. Narasipur taluk on Mysuru-Kollegal Highway) prevented to take timely action to veer to the correct lane in that high speed.

Will people ever learn, is the moot question. My heart goes to the families of those killed.
