Lack of maintenance of drains will prove costly

Sir,

It is unfortunate that the authorities concerned are grossly negligent in attending to the problem of maintaining and cleaning of drains. This is the basic requirement to control flooding of road surface and prevent water rushing into houses in low-lying areas or where houses are constructed with low plinth level when there is rain.

The sudden interest now shown in cleaning the drains is in keeping with the history of such knee-jerk reactions which betrays lack of sustained system put in place to attend to this (Cleaning of Raja Kaluves, big drains begin, Star of Mysore dated May 29).

This attitude is exemplified in the report in another column where repeated appeal to authorities have failed to elicit any action to clear clogged drains, overflowing manholes of Hanchya-Sathagalli B-Zone.

Maintenance and clearing of drains may be a mundane work and unglamorous  but lack of attending to it may be devastating.

Would the authorities look into this and remedy the short-comings on a priority basis?
