Lectures mark Librarians’ Day

Mysuru: Lectures marked the Librarians’ Day commemorating the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan (SRR), who is considered as the father of Library Science, Documentation and Information Science in India, in city yesterday.

Delivering a special lecture on the topic ‘Research in Library Science and use of Internet — A thought,’ at the event organised by the University of Mysore (UoM) Library at the Library Hall, Manasagangothri, Prof. Shivarajappa, Director, Centre for Gandhian Studies, UoM, said that Dr. S.R. Ranganathan was rightly called as the Father of Library Science in India.

Pointing out that Dr. Ranganathan headed the Indian Library Association from 1944 to 1953, he said that the great Librarian was credited with building Library Science programmes at all the Institutions where he worked.

Noting that Dr. Ranganathan’s knowledge on Librarianship was exemplary, Prof. Shivarajappa said he strived hard for the establishment of Free Public Libraries throughout India and for the creation of a comprehensive National Library.

An expo of Dr. Ranganathan’s books was also organised to mark the occasion.

UoM Librarian Dr. R.T.D. Ramesh Gandhi, Deputy Librarian  Dr. Y.N. Somashekar, Assistant Librarians Venkatesh, Nagasundara and others were present.

In another event organised at Maharaja’s College premises, speakers  recalled the contributions of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan to Library Science.

KSOU Librarian Dr. K. Prakash inaugurated the event.

Teresian College Librarians Rukminiamma was the chief guest. Maharaja Evening College Kannada faculty Dr. C.D. Parashuram, Deputy Librarian R.K. Somashekar, KSOU Kannada faculty Dr. N.R. Chandregowda and others were present.
