Sir,
This refers to the news item titled ‘Free meals in exchange for plastic waste’ in SOM dated May 7. Deputy Commissioner Dr. K.V. Rajendra stated that the district administration is considering adopting the Chhattisgarh model to address the issue of plastic waste accumulation.
While Municipal authorities in Chhattisgarh have successfully implemented and seen the project thrive, officials at Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) have previously attempted to replicate Indore model without success.
This failure is attributed to the negligence of MCC officials and the MCC Commissioner in addressing issues such as garbage accumulation, waste management, chemical effluents, stray cattle and plastic waste.
There appears to be a lack of dedication or commitment from MCC to address the city’s cleanliness. For instance, despite recent storms causing trees to fall, many fallen trees and branches remain uncleared throughout the city, demonstrating MCC’s disregard for civic cleanliness.
However, initiatives like the installation of a plastic water bottle recycling machine at Nexus Mall in Mysuru showcase commendable corporate social responsibility (CSR) and awareness toward plastic recycling by the mall owner.
It is acknowledged that citizens also bear responsibility for the city’s unclean environment and the spread of diseases. Despite efforts to educate the public, challenges persist due to illiteracy, unemployment and a lack of awareness among some segments of the population.
Furthermore, the reckless behaviour of drivers on the roads reflects broader societal issues such as unemployment, lack of education and irresponsibility.
Citizens, MCC officials, the Police Commissioner and other authorities concerned must work collaboratively to improve the city’s cleanliness, safety, and liveability.
Achieving the Cleanest City award for Mysuru remains a distant goal, emphasising the need for collective efforts and commitment from all stakeholders.
