Mysore/Mysuru: The Kuvempunagar Police have arrested a man on charges of extorting money from shop owners after faking himself as an Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) Health Inspector. Vijaykumar, 61, a resident of 12th Cross near Vivekananda Circle, Kuvempunagar, is the one who is arrested.
Vijaykumar, claiming himself to be an Health Inspector, was allegedly extorting money from shop-keepers in MCC Zone-2 limits for the past two months, under the pretext of checking license. But the shop-keepers getting suspicious, informed the matter to MCC Zone-2 Health Inspector H.M. Shivaprasad, following which he, along with his staff, succeeded in tracing the accused Vijaykumar near Vivekananda Circle on Aug. 13.
Vijaykumar was caught and brought to the jurisdictional Kuvempunagar Police Station.
During interrogation, Vijaykumar confessed to visiting shops posing himself as a MCC Health Inspector and extorted money from shop-keepers, after threatening them, following which he was arrested. The Police have seized a scooter in which the accused used to visit shops.
City Police Commissioner Dr. Chandragupta has asked shop-keepers and members of the public to be wary of unscrupulous persons who visit shops seeking to show Trade License or other documents.
He has advised the shop-keepers to ask such persons to show their Departmental ID cards and check them for their authenticity.
