Man gets 10-year RI for sexually assaulting mentally-challenged woman

Mysore/Mysuru: A 47-year-old man, accused of sexually assaulting a mentally challenged woman, has been sentenced to 10 years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI), upon conviction, by a Court in the city yesterday.

Kumar alias Kumati, aged 47 years and native of Avarthi village, Periyapatna taluk, in the district, is the convicted person. He had been charged of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old mentally challenged woman, who was alone at her house on Apr. 27, 2022. He had later gone absconding.

Following a complaint by the victim’s mother, the then Circle Police Inspector of Bylakuppe Station B.G. Prakash had registered a case against the accused and had submitted a charge-sheet to the Court.

Seventh Additional District and Sessions Court Judge M. Ramesh, who heard the arguments and counter arguments in the case, found the accused guilty on the basis of evidences related to the case. Under rape charge, he was convicted under IPC Section 376 (2) (I), for 10 years Rigorous Imprisonment and was imposed a fine of Rs. 50,000, while under IPC Section 450, he was sentenced for six months imprisonment. All the sentences will run concurrently.
