Man gets lifer for killing wife

Mysore/Mysuru: City’s 5th Additional District and Sessions Court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of murdering his wife.

The man, who has been convicted, is Kanchigowda, a resident of Ramenahalli village in Hunsur taluk.

Kanchigowda had married Sundaramma, daughter of Bommegowda of Boppanahalli village and the couple has two daughters. Suspecting his wife’s character, Kanchigowda used to reportedly physically and mentally harass Sundaramma.

Fed with her husband’s harassment, Sundaramma had got one of her daughters admitted to a Government College in Mysuru and took her another daughter to Benglauru, where she began to work at a garments factory for a living. She (Sundaramma) used to come to Rammenahalli during festivals and go back to Bengaluru.

On June 8, 2019, Sundaramma had come to Rammenahalli to take part in Maari Habba and on June 9 at about 9 pm, Kanchigowda picked up a fight asking Sundaramma not to go to Bengaluru. On June 10, when Sundaramma was at her home, Kanchigowda again came to the house, asked her not to go back to Bengaluru and picked up a fight.

But Sundaramma told him (Kanchigowda) that she would go back to Bengaluru because he would always pick up fights and harass her if she stays with him. Angered over her reply, Kanchigowda slapped Sundaramma hard and when she collapsed, he (Kanchigowda) picked up a veil which was nearby and strangulated Sundaramma to death.

A case was registered at Hunsur Rural Police Station and the then Inspector Poovaiah, conducted an investigation and had submitted a charge-sheet to the Court.

5th Additional District and Sessions Court Judge Mallikarjun, who took up the case, heard the arguments from both sides, found Kanchigowda guilty of the crime and sentenced him to life imprisonment besides imposing a fine of Rs. 17,000.

5th Additional Public Prosecutor Nagappa C. Nakman argued on behalf of the Government.
