Man sentenced to life for killing wife

Mysuru: The city’s 5th Additional District and Sessions Court has sentenced one Javaraju to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife, Puttamma, a resident of Chatnahalli village.

Javaraju had previously been married to Jayamma for 30 years. Due to physical and mental abuse, Jayamma left him and moved to her parents’ home.

On Nov. 1, 1998, Javaraju married Puttamma, and the couple had a daughter. However, Javaraju continued his abusive behaviour, subjecting Puttamma to mental and physical harassment, frequent quarrels, and false accusations about her character. He also forced her into sexual acts, even when their daughter was home, and threatened her when she resisted.

On June 27, 2022, at around 1.30 pm, while Puttamma was sleeping, Javaraju decapitated her and placed her severed head on the cot. He then locked the house and fled on his two-wheeler. The gruesome details came to light during the investigation.

Investigation Officer G.S. Swarna filed the charge sheet, and the case was heard by Judge Gururaj Somakkalavar. After reviewing the evidence, the court found Javaraju guilty and sentenced him to three years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 5,000 under Section 498(A) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for domestic violence.

Additionally, he was sentenced to life imprisonment with a fine of Rs. 10,000 under Section 302 for murder. Public Prosecutor B.E. Yogeshwara represented the Government  in the case.
