Minimally Invasive Stem Cell Therapy at Manipal Hospital

Mysore/Mysuru: City’s Manipal Hospital is offering a new hope for Recurrent Urethral Stricture patients with Minimally Invasive Stem Cell Therapy.

Addressing a press meet at Patrakarthara Bhavan in city recently, Consultant – Urology and Andrology & Kidney Transplant Surgeon Dr. T.P.  Dinesh Kumar, Hospital Director B.J. Sandeep Patel and Chief of Medical Services Dr. Upendra Shenoy highlighted this breakthrough and its implications for future urological care.

Raghu (name changed), a 30-year-old male with difficulty passing urine and a thin urinary stream, consulted Dr. Dinesh Kumar. He had a history of urethral stricture and had undergone visual internal urethrotomy a year back at Bengaluru. While the procedure relieved his symptoms, the relief was short stayed and the problem recurred within six months.

Explaining the condition, Dr. Dinesh Kumar said, “Urethral strictures usually develop due to unnoticed trauma, infections or inflammation of the urinary passage. Even after surgery, recurrence is common because scar tissue tends to reform.”

For this procedure, stem cells were harvested from the patient’s oral mucosa (inner cheek) and sent to a specialised regenerative laboratory in Pune, where they were multiplied.

The processed cells were converted into a therapeutic solution and using a cystoscope, the narrowed segment was gently treated with a laser and the stem cell solution was injected into the affected area without any external cuts.  Dr. Dinesh said, “The advanced stem cell therapy is minimally invasive performed using precise laser and endoscopic techniques. Since the therapy uses the patient’s own cells, there is no risk of rejection. Healing is faster, recovery is smoother and the chances of recurrence is reduced, thus offering a new hope for patients with recurrent urethral strictures.”
