Srirangapatna: With complaints galore regarding illegal stone mining and operation of quarry units in Srirangapatna and Pandavapura taluks that pose a threat to the safety and stability of KRS dam located in the taluk, Minister for Mines and Geology Murugesh Nirani visited several mining areas in Srirangapatna on Monday.
Speaking to presspersons after visiting mining areas around T.M.Hosur and Kalenahalli villages, Nirani said that he has directed the officials to penalise illegal quarry owners and also to collect Royalty from them.
Nirani said that the officials have been asked to submit a report on mining and quarrying activities in the district and the Government will take appropriate action against illegal quarries and mines based on the report.
Referring to sand transportation, Nirani said that only those building Ashraya homes have been given permission to transport sand. However, those transporting sand illegally in bullock carts for selling it to others are being penalised, he added.
Mandya MP Sumalatha Ambarish, who accompanied the Minister during inspection, asserted that she was committed to stop illegal mining across the district.
Expressing concern over unscientific and improper use of dynamites in stone quarrying units in the vicinity of KRS dam, she wanted the officials to take immediate action in this regard considering the safety and stability of KRS dam.
Urging the officials to take measures for punishing all those involved in illegal mining and stone quarrying activities in Mandya district, she asked the officials to ensure full collection of royalty and penalty.
Pointing out villagers living in the vicinity of legal mines are facing health hazards due to the dust generated by mining activities, Sumalatha urged for free treatment to those who fall sick because of dust and pollution.
She also called for judicious, scientific and proper use of dynamites in quarry units, as it is equally important to conserve wildlife.
Srirangapatna Tahsildar Roopa, Mines and Geology Department Deputy Director Pushpa and other officials from concerned Departments accompanied the Minister.
