Moonlight concert at Suttur Mutt

Mysore/Mysuru: Ustad Sarfaraz Khan and Ustad Faraz Khan will present a vocal duet as part of the 265th edition of the monthly moonlight music (Beladingala Sangeetha) at Suttur Mutt at the foot of Chamundi Hill in the city at 6 pm on Mar.25.

The Khan Brothers come from a musical background family. Their grandfather Ustad Abdul Khader Khan, a Sarangi Maestro, had served  at Dharwad Akashavani. Their great grandfather Ustad Shaikh Abdulla Khan was an Asthana Vidwan in Mysore Palace and Hyderabad Nawab’s Kingdom.

After taking lessons in music  from their father at an early age, Sarfaraz learnt the higher levels of music from Padma Vibhushan Pandit Ramanarayan, while Faraz learnt  Sarod under the tutelage of Pandit Rajeev Taranath of Mysuru. Sarfaraz is an A Grade artiste of Akashavani.

The duo, practising Sarangi under Guru Padma Bhushana Pandit Ramnarayan, have presented musical concerts across the country and globe, winning prizes.

They will be accompanied by Pandit Veerabhadraiah Hiremath on harmonium and  Pandit Sumit Nayak on tabla. Pandit Veerabhadraiah Hiremath is a disciple of Gadag’s Pandit Puttaraj Gawai. Having graduated (Sangeetha Visharada) from Akhila Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, he has won many awards and prizes for his excellence  in harmonium.

Pandit Sumit Nayak is a native of Kerala  and learnt his early music lessons from his parents Sudhakar Nayak and Meera. Later, he learnt higher lessons in tabla from Kochi’s Vidwan Naveen Pai and senior tabla artiste at Bengaluru  Dr. Udayaraj Karpur.

A Graduate in Engineering from Anna University in Madras and a  post-graduate in tabla from Mysuru’s KSGH Music and Performing Arts University, Sumit Nayak has presented many musical concerts in the country and abroad, winning a number of awards and prizes. He is a B High grade artiste of Akashavani.
