Most of the medians are a nuisance

Sir,

I agree with the views of MRG Murthy (SOM dated Saturday, 12th August) that medians built on a majority of roads are more of a nuisance than a means to ensure the smooth flow of traffic. In case of an emergency situation, manoeuvrability becomes a casualty.

I have seen in New York that barricades are provided only on highways to segregate fast-moving traffic in either direction. In urban areas, on streets and avenues where two-way traffic is permitted, the purpose is served by painting two parallel yellow lines in the middle of the road, which is considered a “Lakshman Rekha”. Owing to strict enforcement by traffic authorities, the sanctity of the yellow lines is maintained. If similar measures can be adopted here, the diversion of precious resources in erecting medians can be avoided.
