Mysuru: Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement carried out a door-to-door awareness campaign on Nov. 28 to raise awareness about E-Waste management among community members in Saraswathipuram.
The campaign which started from Saraswathipuram Post Office was flagged off by Dr.M.S. Jayanth, Chief Health Officer at Mysuru City Corporation.
Vedavathi and Shivakumar, Corporators of Saraswathipuram, Sadanand, Senior Superintendent Main Post Office, Saraswathipuram, Fathima Mary from SVYM and Bhavya, PSI, Saraswathipuram were present.
The campaign reached a total of 740 houses in Saraswathipuram and sensitised the community members about the importance of properly disposing off their e-waste.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Jayanth emphasised not to treat E-waste as other wet or bio-degradable waste and urged the community members to discard their e-waste like phones, batteries and other electronics under 5-kg in the e-waste drop box installed at Saraswathipuram Post Office. He also announced that the MCC collects E-Waste on the third Sunday of every month during their door-to-door waste collection rounds. He assured everyone that the E-waste collected will be disposed / recycled responsibly.
Poor and unorganised E-Waste management is seen as a global concern with the growing risks to public health, resource conservation and the environment.
Praveen Kumar Sayyaparaju, Deputy CEO, SVYM, stressed the importance of involving the community in better e-waste management and assured many more awareness campaigns will be conducted in future.
The awareness campaign is part of a tri-partite agreement between Saraswathipuram Main Post Office, Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement and bE-Responsible, an initiative by Saahas in partnership with ‘Environmental Synergies in Development (ENSYDE)’.
