My Tree Audit: Ensure root-space reclamation

Sir,

The recent launch of the roadside tree survey titled Mysuru Tree Audit 2025-26 (Project ‘Nam Mara’ – My Tree) in collaboration with the Bherunda Foundation is a landmark step for Mysuru’s green heritage.

However, the data collected should not be kept solely for records. Many of our heritage trees are currently being suffocated by asphalt and concrete laid right up to their trunks during recent road works.

I urge the authorities to mandate a one-metre porous buffer around every geo-tagged tree.

Allowing roots to breathe is the only way to prevent the sudden collapses that threaten public safety during our increasingly heavy monsoon winds.

The survey team should ensure that root-space reclamation follows My Tree Audit.
