Mysuru: Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP), Mysore, under the Presidentship of Dr. Rajeshwari Madappa, will be launching Mysore Adolescent Health Academy (MAHA) on Nov.24 at 9.30 am at Hotel Southern Star in city.
Dr. Preeti Galgali, Chairperson, Adolescent Health Academy, India, who will be the chief guest, will install Dr. S.N. Mothi as Chairman and Dr. M.R. Prashanth as Secretary of MAHA.
Dr. D. Narayanappa, Professor in Paediatrics, JSS Hospital and Dr. Govinda Raju, Professor and Head, Department of Paediatrics, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Medical College, Bengaluru, will be the guests of honour.
253 million adolescents in India: There are 253 million adolescents in the age group of 10-19 years in India. Adolescent Health Academy is a wing of Indian Academy of Paediatrics which aims to protect children in this age from risky behaviours, promote their physical and mental wellness and protect them from injury and abuse.
These young children and teenagers have unique health and psychosocial issues. They require nutrition and physical activity guidance and also educational counselling. They are susceptible to several preventable and treatable health problems like sexual abuse, early and unintended pregnancy, unsafe sex leading to STI/HIV/AIDS, nutritional disorders like malnutrition, anaemia and overweight, alcohol, tobacco and drug abuse. In addition, they also suffer from a higher level of mental health problems and are susceptible to injuries and violence.
