Mysuru to get 2 new Flyovers

Mysuru, Oct. 31 – If all goes according to the plan, the cultural capital Mysuru may get two new flyovers to ease of traffic flow. Public Works Department (PWD) has been mulling over to build flyovers on two prominent roads — JLB Road and Vinoba Road (Hunsur Road) — in city on the lines of Bengaluru, where flyovers have come in handy in addressing major traffic bottlenecks.

Reasons aplenty

Mysuru, being a prominent tier-II city, is witnessing a rapid growth, with the borders of the city growing beyond over 40-km long Outer Ring Road (ORR) junction. Also the rise in traffic density and the rate of accidents along with the spurt in population growth are truly the matters of concern.

Hence, plans are on the anvil to construct flyovers, which if realised, may take the total number of flyovers here to three, with Hinkal junction on Hunsur Road already connected by a flyover, albeit for a shorter distance.

This was also the first flyover built in Mysuru, seven years ago in 2018, by Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA), now rebranded as Mysuru Development Authority (MDA), to check traffic pile ups and accidents.

Two roads

It has been intended to build flyovers on Jhansi Lakshmi Bai (JLB) Road and Vinoba Road. On JLB Road, the flyover will be built from Babu Jagjivan Ram Circle in front of City Railway Station, passing via Ramaswamy Circle and Yelethota to Nanjangud Road junction (near JSS College).

On Vinoba Road (Hunsur Road), the flyover will be built from Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa Circle (Metropole Circle) to Hinkal via Valmiki Circle (Paduvarahalli junction) and Aishwarya Petrol Bunk junction.

Survey, soil test

As a preliminary task, the PWD engineers have been conducting soil tests by collecting samples after digging earth on a stretch of roads identified for flyover project. That apart, a survey is being carried out with the help of video recordings to mark the spots for building underpasses, overbridges, entry and exit points. The trees and street lights that are required to be removed along with other cables are also being marked during the survey.

DPR in preparation

The engineers are working towards preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) including the estimated cost and the timeframe for completing the works, not to ignore the heritage buildings and commercial buildings that dot these roads and the technical hurdles and other points. The proposal will be submitted to the Government after collecting the opinions of local MP, MLAs, MLCs and the public concerned.

Hinkal junction

The flyover at Hinkal junction, which once witnessed heavy traffic snarls, has proven advantageous in addressing the related issues. The traffic signals on both JLB Road and Vinoba Road are comparatively more, which grows by manifold during Dasara every year, one among the several reasons to identify them for the need of flyovers.

Once the flyovers are commissioned, the vehicles coming from Mangaluru, Madikeri, Hassan and neighbouring Kerala State can reach the heart of the city without any risk. So also the localites, who have been the major victims of traffic related hurdles.

Similar plans

It may be recalled, though flyovers were also planned at Manipal Hospital junction on Mysuru-Bengaluru Highway, entry point of Vijayanagar Fourth Stage, Bogadi Circle junction and KEB junction at Dattagalli, the project has been delayed for reasons better known to those who matter.
