Nanjangud: Following the release of 1.21 lakh cusecs of water from Kabini Reservoir to Kapila River this morning, most parts of Nanjangud remained flooded.
The situation is likely to worsen as the inflow to Kabini Reservoir is expected to increase. Banasura Sagar Dam in Wayanad, Kerala, has reached it full capacity and the water will be released to Panamaram River, the tributary of Kabini.
The water level at Kabini Dam (as of 8 am today) stood at 2,280.88 ft. as against the maximum of 2,284 ft. The Dam is receiving 1,04,080 cusecs of water and 1,21,000 cusecs is being let out to Kapila River.
Relief Centres
The District Administration has opened 11 relief centres and two goshalas in Nanjangud, where 1,277 people and 75 animals are being taken care of. Nanjangud Tahsildar Mahesh Kumar and MLA Harshavardhan, have stayed put in the Temple Town and are supervising the relief works.
Damages
Most of the areas in Nanjangud have turned into islands due to the overflowing of Kabini River. This has resulted in damages to 379 houses and farmers have suffered crop loss due to flooding of the river. Halladakeri, adjacent to Srikanteshwara Temple is flooded and residents have been moved to safety. The Halladakeri Main Road which connects Chamarajanagar and Mysuru-Nanjangud Road have been flooded and are closed for traffic. Traffic has been diverted.
Due to water overflowing on Mysuru-Ooty Road near Mallanamoole, the road has been closed and traffic has been diverted via Varuna-Kuppegala-Tayur route. Heejige, Rampura and Suttur Bridges have been closed.
