84-year-old and 70-year-old patients undergo rare procedures

Mysore/Mysuru: The Heart Team of Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Mysuru, has added another feather to its medical achievements by successfully performing Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR, also called Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation -TAVI), one of the most advanced cardiac treatment modalities.

The team had performed the treatment on 84-year-old and 70-year-old patients suffering critical heart ailments. The two patient cases included one of Dr. Hegde, 84 and a resident of Sagara, who initially presented symptoms of generalised weakness and breathlessness along with leg pain while walking. Regular ECG and ECHO revealed an enlarged and weak heart. Due to age factor, he was advised treatment through medicines. He further approached Dr. V. Keshava Murthy, Senior Interventional Cardiologist, at Narayana Hospital, Mysuru, as his symptoms resurfaced after two weeks.

He was advised aortic valve replacement surgery but in view of his weak heart with a kidney dysfunction, it was a high risk surgery and hence his attenders refused the advice considering his age. After evaluating patient’s condition, it was concluded that, without any aortic valve intervention his survival is short and he is considered for a breakthrough, highly effective percutaneous procedure called TAVI / TAVR.

This procedure is an hour-long non-invasive procedure through local anaesthesia and gave new life to Dr. Hegde. Within one hour of the procedure patient was talking and walking on the 3rd day with improvement in his heart functioning without much alter in his kidney function test.

Another case is of Chengappa, 70, of Kodagu, who was diabetic with chronic kidney disease and hypertension. He visited Dr. Keshava Murthy at Narayana Hospital for cardiac evaluation. Evaluating his complete condition that he was a chronic kidney disease patient with high chances of mortality if undertaken for any form of surgery, hence he was further suggested a new breakthrough technology called Trans Cathedral Implantation. The procedure was done with utmost accuracy and was successful with improved discharge condition on the fourth day with normal activities and dialysis being undertaken.

Dr. Keshava Murthy  said, “Transcatheter  Aortic Valve Replacement technology is a life-saving procedure and a new advanced technology. In case of critical ill patients, giving general anaesthesia carries very high risk but these two patients recovered so well through the procedure. ”

Pavan Kumar, Facility Director, Narayana Hospital, said, “With the completion of 11 TAVR procedures at the Hospital, we aim to continuously expedite excellent oversight and smooth operations of a healthcare facility that made this new age technology possible.”

With these rare patient cases, Narayana Health has emerged as the highest TAVI procedure performing centre in Mysuru.
