Sir,
Maj. Gen. S.G. Vombatkere’s letter on straightening of Jaladarshini Road hits the nail directly on the head (Star of Mysore dated Oct. 12). There is ample clarity and reason to give up such useless projects. I remember another letter some years back by retired Engineer H. R. Bapu Satyanarayana, on the same topic after an accident in which the compound wall of the University was damaged by the speeding vehicle at the curve.
After inspecting the place the renowned engineer had described lack of banking on the outer curve at the bend as the main reason for many accidents besides the speeding. He had wondered how such a fundamental requirement was ignored while building the road and had decried the quality of engineers responsible for such bad design.
No doubt the vehicles will zoom at a greater speed when the widening is done only to result in more accidents and loss of life, that too within the city limits. Where is the necessity? It is another project to plunder the money for some other purpose.
