Though the Swachh Bharat concept is gaining ground everywhere now, there is still a place in the heart of the holy town Nanjangud where cleanliness is least cared about. Come evening, people as in other places, rush to the many non-veg mobile food joints and chaat stalls, unhesitatingly occupying public footpaths on the main thoroughfares and also hindering free movement.
They are surrounded by stray dogs awaiting the throw of meat pieces. This scene can be seen at Hullahalli Circle on the Ooty Main Road. Especially the 18th and 19th Cross stretch on this always-busy Highway connecting the MGS Road has become a haven for unhygienic activities.
Added to this, a 3-sides-open, abandoned private building in the vicinity serves during daytime, as a convenient dump yard for domestic rejects and civic wastes alike (wet and dry), including emptied tender-coconut shells. Post evenings, it turns into a boozers’ paradise.
Open urination and defecation is unabated in the area. The whole place stinks beyond imagination. Liquor bottles, plastic pieces and all kinds of garbage are strewn all over the place rendering it unapproachable.
I pity the lack of minimum civic awareness among our brethren in keeping the area clean.
Hence, there is an urgent need for the civic body to take serious note of this, initiate action to shoo away mobile eateries from the area, ensure cleanliness and keep people secured from the health hazards having food at such highly polluted environs. Also, the owner of this building should be advised to fence his area to restrain public misusing the premises.
