Mysuru: “For the sake of obtaining support money from the government for theatre, nobody should compromise on freedom of expression,” opined writer and critic Nataraj Huliyar.
He was speaking at the valedictory of the five-day Niranthara Ranga Utsava-2017 at Vanaranga in Rangayana premises here last evening.
Nataraj Huliyar opined that undue compromise to receive funds from the Government would demean the critic value of theatre.
He added that it amounted to deliberately obscuring social problems.
Citing an example he said that bowing to pressure of the Government a play exclusively made on the life of Devaraja Urs for the Devaraja Urs birth centenary should not eventually turn out as a sponsored play.
Continuing, Nataraj Huliyar commended Mysuru for good support and encouragement for theatre. He recalled that during the 70s theatre focussed a lot on constructive criticism on politics which has totally faded now.
IT Commissioner Jayaram Rayapura, Niranthara Foundation President M.M. Suguna and others were present.
The play ‘Mundana Kathana’ was also staged later.
