Mysore/Mysuru: Onam, the commemoration of the annual visit of Mahabali — the legendary king of Kerala — will be celebrated at the Infant Jesus Cathedral, Hinkal on Sept. 3 (Sunday). There will be Pookkalamalsaram (Flower Rangoli competition) at 6.45 am followed by the concelebrated Solemn Mass at 8.30 am.
The Flower Rangoli competition is open for all and the maximum number of members in a team is restricted to 5. Each team will be allotted a 5 ft. square space. Only natural flowers, leaves and fruits can be used for the contest. Artificial colours and gum are not permitted. Winners will be awarded cash prizes of Rs.10,001, Rs. 5,001 and Rs. 3,001 respectively along with Trophies. There will be 5 consolation prizes of Rs. 1,001 each.
The public function at 10.15 am will be inaugurated by Very Rev. Fr. Augustine Paimpallil CMI, Provincial, CMI St. Paul’s Province, Mysuru. Rev. Fr. Thomas Mangalathil, Parish Priest, will preside. The Emperor Mahabali will be accorded a reception during the function followed by the traditional cultural programmes of Kerala.
There will be tug-of-war and other sports competitions at 11.30 am. Around 1,500 people are expected to participate in Onasadhya (traditional Onam meals) which will be started at 12.30 pm.
