One generation to the next…

Whether we relish it or not, the generation preceding ours leaves behind a legacy, which in turn the subsequent generation bequeaths. Cash and immovable property are welcome, but not a load of debt to be cleared in tight time-frame and litigation. Information, knowledge and wisdom, in that order, as they relate to daily life and emerging out of years of experiencing the tough and tumble in life of earlier generations are hardly remembered with a sense of gratitude. Customs, beliefs, traditions and even other ingredients of culture which have run through respective families for centuries as a distinct feature of the land’s people seems to have got fractured in our times, taking a heavy toll of the wisdom part of generation to generation legacy. The mutual conduct among the human kind has witnessed both glory and infamy as the pages of history reveal if one chooses to study the chronicles portraying times of war and peace all over the globe.

A dicey legacy marking the early years of 20th century is unarguably the technology to generate nuclear power, which, as it has happened, led to its use in weaponry with destructive punch on a scale never witnessed in all human history. While the present generation has that virtual Brahmaastra in its arsenal, one wishes that no future generation bequeaths it in any form.

While the most feared act by the top brass in one or the other country (among the seven with capability) of pulling the trigger as it were is virtually hanging like the sword of Damocles over seven billion plus global headcount, people at large have before them another agenda which is not of less importance and impact than staving off nuclear holocaust. That agenda revolves round consumption and conservation of the major resources supporting life namely air, water, soil, greenery, terrestrial as well as marine fauna in their order of importance and threat of losing. More than adequate information and knowledge are within our reach concerning the factors behind over-exploitation of the aforementioned resources by populations all over the planet.

In short, we are talking of the rare wealth that one generation bequeaths from an earlier generation, namely, environment. Every generation has its unalienable right to unsullied environment while equally so, every generation has a duty to zealously guard the environment, pristine in all respects.
