Two young men give fresh hope to ten organ recipients
Mysore/Mysuru: B.R. Ashoka, aged 34 and Vemula Tharun, aged 22, were brought to Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysuru, on May 26 and 25 respectively, after they suffered a serious head injury due to road traffic accident. Both were kept on life support as they were in a critical state.
On May 28 at 7.21 pm and on May 29 at 5.23 am respectively, they were declared brain dead due to brain stem failure as per the hospital protocol stipulated by the Transplant of Human Organs Act 1994 by panellist Doctors at Apollo BGS Hospitals. They were both in good health at the time of the incident and further tests confirmed their eligibility for organ donation and their relatives too consented to donate the same.
As per organ donation protocols, officials from SOTTO (State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation, formerly Jeeva Sarthakathe) initiated the process by the organ recipients’ waiting list. Through a cross-clamp done at 6.50 am, Ashoka’s Liver, Heart, Kidneys and Corneas were harvested at 7.45 am. Tharun’s body underwent a cross-clamp at 4.12 pm and his Liver, Heart Valves, Kidneys and Corneas were harvested at 4.45 am. The cross-clamp and harvest procedures took place on the days the respective persons were declared dead at Apollo BGS Hospitals, thus giving a new lease of life to 10 recipients.
