Mysore/Mysuru: Ten individuals are set to get a new lease of life as they will get vital organs harvested from two women at Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysuru, recognised as the 5th Zone for Organ Transplants.
On July 10, 73-year-old N. Gangambike was admitted to Apollo Hospital following breathing difficulty and unconsciousness. An initial CT scan revealed a brain stem infarct and she was immediately transferred to the ICU for life support. Despite critical condition, Gangambike remained on life support for two days.
On July 14, after consultation with a panel of doctors in accordance with the Transplant of Human Organs Act 1994, Gangambike was declared brain dead due to brain stem failure. Her family was counselled for organ donation and they expressed their willingness to proceed. Following organ donation protocols, officials from Jeeva Sarthakathe (now known as State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation – SOTTO) initiated the organ allocation process.
Later, her organs including 2 kidneys, 1 liver and corneas, were harvested and the cross-clamp was performed. The kidneys and liver were donated to Apollo BGS Hospitals, while the corneas were donated to K.R. Hospital in Mysuru.
48-year-old Sudha was brought to Apollo Hospital on July 15 from Dr. Karunakara & Nagarajegowda Multi-Specialty Hospital. She had sustained a severe head injury in a road accident at Belavatta, Ring Road Junction.
Upon arrival, an initial CT scan revealed a brain stem infarct, and Sudha was immediately transferred to the ICU for life support and intensive care. Sudha remained on life support due to her critical condition and she was declared brain dead due to brain stem failure. Her relatives came forward to donate her organs.
Sudha’s organs, including the liver, 2 kidneys, heart valves, lungs and corneas, were harvested. The liver and left kidney were sent to Apollo BGS Hospital, the right kidney to JSS Hospital, heart valves to Narayana Hrudayalaya in Bengaluru, corneas to K.R. Hospital in Mysore and the lungs were sent to Aster CMI in Bengaluru.
