“To overcome accidents in factories,  periodical training should be integrated”

CII holds session with Deputy Director of Factories and Boilers

Mysuru:“Complacent factors need to be eliminated to avoid accidents in factories,” said D. C. Jagadeesh, Deputy Director, Department of  Factories, Boilers, Industrial Safety and Health.

Speaking during a session on ‘Department Initiatives and Recent Amendments’ organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Mysuru, at a private hotel in city recently, he said “to overcome accidents in factory periodical training should be integrated, supervision should be increased and random supervision is required.”

“We just focus on production but don’t see how they are working; unsafe act should be rectified; accidents are not happened, they are caused; 98 percent of accidents are caused while just two percent are nature made,” he opined.

“In the last two years, across Mysuru district where there are 600 registered factories we have conducted more than 150 awareness programmes by using their platforms. Apart from this, Karnataka Safety Institute too conducts 300 programmes across the State every year. Due to more awareness among the employees, the number of fatal accidents has come down drastically in Mysuru district. Last year just one fatal accident was reported which was the same two years back. Across the State where there are 16,300 registered factories, every year an average 45 fatal accidents are reported,” said Jagadeesh.  

On the occasion he also briefed about various amendments which have been notified from January this year which includes classification of industry to streamline and simplify the inspection system, the Karnataka Factory Rules Act 1961, Karnataka State Factory Self-Certification scheme, Child Labour Prohibition Act etc.  

Bharani Kumar, Convenor, Manufacturing Panel, CII Mysuru & Unit Head, UB Mysuru, also spoke. On the occasion, D.C. Jagadeesh was felicitated for conducting more than 120 training programmes in various industries catering to more than 10,000 employees in the last one year in Mysuru District and for responding to calls round-the-clock.
