Mysuru: A two-and-a-half-year-old lost her life to heavy rain in city yesterday. She fell into an overflowing drain in front of her house in N.R. Mohalla even before her parents could notice.
The incident occurred at Muneshwaranagar at Shanthinagar, N.R. Mohalla and the girl has been identified as Alia, daughter of Mohammad Hussain.
According to people in the area, due to heavy rain last night at around 11 pm, water had entered their houses. The gushing water also entered Hussain’s house and the couple woke up to clean the mess.
They woke up Alia who was sleeping inside and made her sit in front of the house that had a small concrete extension. As the couple was busy draining out the water, they failed to notice their daughter falling into the drain.
The overflowing drain was bang in front of the house and the couple’s neighbours said that the child would have walked in a sleepy state.
Soon after the child fell, her parents and neighbours managed to fish out the girl and she was rushed to K.R. Hospital. The child died on the way.
Learning about the incident, Tahsildar T. Ramesh Babu visited the house this morning and offered a cheque of Rs. 4 lakh as compensation from the government. He told the parents that a post-mortem has to be conducted along with other legal procedures. But the parents refused a post-mortem and the Tahsildar paid Rs. 5,000 for cremation expenses. No case has been registered.
