Sir,
The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC), in association with the Horticulture / Urban Forestry Department, regularly undertakes plantation drives across the city. Saplings are also planted by Good Samaritans who care deeply about Mysuru’s greenery.
Until recently, these efforts were followed by systematic watering and maintenance by MCC gardeners or private contractors, ensuring a good survival rate for the plants.
However, of late, though saplings continue to be planted, there appears to be no proper arrangement for their regular watering and upkeep.
As a result, many of the saplings planted by the MCC wither away within weeks, defeating the very purpose of the initiative and resulting in avoidable loss to the public exchequer.
With summer already setting in, it is imperative that the MCC urgently restores proper responsibility for watering and maintaining saplings planted along roadsides and medians so that these well-intentioned drives translate into real environmental benefits.ss
