150-kg plastic collected from Kukkarahalli Lake premises
Mysore/Mysuru: To mark World Nature Conservation Day, the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) and University of Mysore (UoM) jointly organised a Plogathon at Kukkarahalli Lake premises and an Awareness Rally at St. Philomena’s Church yesterday to create awareness among the public about not using plastic.
As part of the Swachh Survekshan Abhiyan, over 35 participants, including NSS students, UoM students, Maharaja’s College students and the general public, took part in the Plogathon and collected 150-kg of single-use plastic discarded around Kukkarahalli Lake premises.
A cash prize of Rs. 5,000 was presented to UoM Post Graduation student Mahendra for collecting the maximum quantity of plastic wastes. Rs. 3,000 was awarded to Sharath of Maharaja’s College, who secured the second place, while Rs. 2,000 was given to Niranjan, who secured the third place in collecting plastic wastes.
Participation certificates were given to all those who took part in the cleaning drive. Corporator Vedavathi, MCC Environmental Engineers, Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE), and UoM NSS Officers were present.
Awareness Rally
Over 82 students from Good Shepherd English School, Veeranagere, took part in the awareness rally organised by St. Philomena’s Church MCC Zone-7 Office. The students conducted an awareness rally in the surrounding streets of the Church, educating the public about the importance of reducing the use of plastics. MCC Zone Environmental Engineer Naveen, Health Inspectors and School Teachers were present.
