New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today hailed the Indian armed forces for their prowess and sacrifices for the country on the occasion of ‘Kargil Vijay Diwas’ – the anniversary of India’s victory in the 1999 Kargil conflict with Pakistan.

Defence Minister Arun Jaitley later visited the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate, where he joined three Chiefs of the armed forces for the wreath-laying ceremony.

The Kargil conflict in the mountains of Jammu and Kashmir’s Ladakh region began after Pakistani troops occupied Indian posts. It took about three months for the Indian forces to recapture the posts.
