Panel debates the relevance of poems, literature in an era of online relationships

Mysore/Mysuru: During the 8th Mysuru Literature Festival, panellists engaged in a thought-provoking discussion on the topic ‘relevance of poems in an era of online relationships.’ Their consensus was that social media serves as the simplest and fastest means of connecting literature with readers.

Tahsildar Dr. B.R. Shruthi emphasised that quality of writing has not necessarily declined due to social media. “Rather than relying solely on traditional publishing or print media, individuals can now express themselves directly through social networks. This immediacy fosters instant reactions & encourages healthy discussions and debates. When used effectively, social media becomes a valuable tool,” he noted. Dr. Shruthi, who is also a poet, recited her poems titled ‘Antara’ and ‘Avalu.’

Caters to a young audience

M.S. Shekhar, in his address, regretted that social media is often dominated by content catering to a young audience. He advocated for serious poetry to find its place in this digital landscape. According to him, authentic poems should emerge from the depths of one’s inner self. He later recited the poem ‘Krishnavarnada Putta Pora.’

Rajendra Prasad highlighted ongoing discussions within literary circles regarding online versus offline literature over the past 15 years. He pointed out that in the past, poems were primarily published in newspapers and weeklies. However, the advent of Kannada blogs provided a platform for writers with an inclination for self-expression.

Madhurani opined that social media is accessible to everyone. Nevertheless, writers bear the responsibility of maintaining the essence and basics of their work. She added that patience is essential when writing for new platforms. Madhurani also rendered her songs ‘Nanna Jaasusi Huduga’ and ‘Chitte.’

Session moderator and Senior Writer H.S. Shivaprakash, said that, social media is fastest way to reach readers. He noted that any medium for reaching readers has its unique strengths. Furthermore, he said social media has democratised spirit behind poetry. Shivaprakash recited the poem ‘Hannugalu.’
