Police assault on Chikkamagalur Lawyer: City advocates take out protest rally

Mysore/Mysuru: Strongly condemning the brutal assault on a Lawyer at Chikkamagalur last week, members of the Mysore Bar Association  boycotted the Court proceedings today and took out a rally in the city to register their protest.

The rally, which commenced from the Law Courts complex on Krishnaraja Boulevard, passed through JLB road before reaching Ramaswamy Circle, where the advocates formed a human chain. Throughout the rally, the advocates raised slogans against the Police.

Speaking to presspersons at Ramaswamy Circle, Mysore Bar Association President M. Mahadevaswamy condemned the Police assault on Chikkamagalur Lawyer and demanded stern against the guilty policemen.

“After the higher ups in the Police Department suspended the guilty Policemen, the Chikkamagalur Police have booked a case against the Lawyers itself,” he said while wondering why the Police let out the guilty Policemen on Station Bail when a case has been registered against them (Police) under Section 307 of IPC (Attempt to Murder), which is a serious offence.

Mahadevaswamy further said that even the Karnataka High Court has suo moto registered a case taking note of the Police assault on the Lawyer and the case is scheduled to come up for hearing in the HC tomorrow. Based on the Court’s ruling, the Lawyers will chalk out further course of action, he said adding that the Chief Minister has also been urged to pass the Karnataka Advocates Protection Bill for ensuring the safety and security of Advocates.

Later the advocates presented a memorandum to Additional DC Loknath seeking stern action against the guilty Policemen.

The Bar Association office-bearers and hundreds of Lawyers took part in the protest rally.
